About Dear Graduate

We created this book for graduates, to help them think deliberately about how they want to spend their lives—and who they want to become.

We first thought about all the crossroads in our own lives and why we chose the paths we took. We thought about all the people, smarts, and skills it takes to keep the world running. It inspired us and we wondered how we can all find dignity and satisfaction in our work, no matter what we do.

We also realized that asking, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” isn’t as helpful as it used to be. Maybe a better question is,

“What will you do when you grow up?”

We hope this book inspires future generations to continue to reframe age-old questions, to find new meaning in what is right for themselves, and to set their own standards for contentment and personal happiness.
